Aston Villa 2 Leeds 1: Bailey shines as Emery’s troops sneak it despite Gnonto masterclass for unlucky Whites

ASTON VILLA survived a late scare to pick up a fortunate win against Leeds.

Leon Bailey put the hosts in front in the third minute when he curled into the top corner following a devastating counter-attack.

From then on the remainder of the first half was dominated by Leeds but the visitors could not find a way past the impressive Emi Martinez.

Rodrigo thought he had equalised with a close range strike but the linesman raised his flag as the striker was offside in the build-up.

Jesse Marsch’s side continued where they left off after the break but were dealt a demoralising blow when Emi Buendia doubled Villa’s lead in the 64th minute.

The midfielder was initially ruled offside when headed in after Bailey’s strike was saved, but VAR overturned the decision to put Villa in a commanding lead.

But Leeds were handed a lifeline after substitute Patrick Bamford smashed in from inside the six-yard box following brilliant play from Wilfried Gnonto, who spun Ashley Young before finding the striker.
