THE dress code “smart casual” always flummoxes me.
But if there’s an outfit that encapsulates the description perfectly then it has to be a velvet-look suit.

This velvet suit finally solved my smart/casual dilemma[/caption]
This one, in deep red with ruched sleeves, could be dressed up for a winter wedding with a silk shirt underneath, or dressed down – as shown here – with a plain polo neck sweater or even a smart, long-sleeved T-shirt.
Either way, velvet looks classy and gives the impression of making an effort, but also keeps you warm and comfortable if the venue’s a bit chilly.
After all, how many times have we turned up somewhere in a slinky frock and ended up having to keep our coats on because someone forgot to switch on the heating?
This suit has a loose, rather than tailored, style and the trousers have good length for anyone who, like me, is taller than average.

I have teamed it with a pair of sparkly court shoes – very “in” at the moment – for that extra smart look.
Classy, warm and comfortable. Suits me.
