The accident involved a lorry and a car and has blocked one lane just before Junction 28 for the A12 in Essex. Essex Travel News tweeted: “M25 anticlockwise – one lane blocked just before J28 (A12) by an accident involving a lorry and a car – slow traffic back towards J30 (A13) – not helped by wet conditions.”

It later added: “A12 Londonbound slow from J29 (A120/Ardleigh) towards J27 (Spring Lane) on the Colchester bypass after an earlier accident was cleared from the carriageway.”

There was also “severe disruption” on the M25 Junction 30 in Essex for A282 Lakeside.

BBC Essex said: “M25 Essex – M25 lane closed on entry slip road clockwise at J30, A282 (Lakeside), because of a breakdown. Traffic is coping well.”

Meanwhile a severe accident on the M11 in the county was creating delays.

It later emerged that an unattended backpack has sparked the scare.

Officers seized the bag and confirmed that no suspicious circumstances were identified.

In a statement, Kent Police said: “Shortly before midday on Tuesday 19 October 2021 Kent Police received concerns about an unaccompanied backpack which had been located near the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge.

“Officers have seized the bag and no suspicious circumstances have been identified.

“A road closure was enforced as a precaution and has since been lifted.”

The incident caused tailbacks of three miles, adding around 45 minutes onto journey times.
