All of the inhabitants of the trailer, which contained crates of San Pellegrino sparkling water, were arrested and taken to custody to be processed by immigration officials. They are described as “fit and well”.
The HGV was stopped on the M1 near Leicester after several members of the public had reported they had heard banging coming from the trailer in slow-moving traffic on the motorway.
Police shared details of the operation on Twitter in the early hours of the morning, reports Leicestershire Live.
Leicestershire Roads Politics Unit wrote on Twitter: “Members of public report hearing banging coming from refrigerated trailer in slow moving traffic on the M1. HGV stopped, seven people found in the trailer! Fortunately they’re all fit & well.
“All seven arrested & taken to custody for immigration teams to come and process.”
It comes as Home Office figures show nearly six times as many migrants crossed the English Channel in October than the same month last year.
This is despite promises from Home Secretary Priti Patel to bring crossing numbers down post-Brexit.
Nearly 20,000 migrants have made the crossing so far this year, twice as many as in 2020.
